Gigi Camille was managing musicians when her father asked her to help him breathe new life into his jewelry company. What started on a whim making “all this crazy jewelry” with the extra chains, jewels and other cool pieces he moved into her garage, turned into a chic, urban jewelry line carried in stores like Nordstrom, BCBG, Arden B. and Kitson. Now 2 1/2 years later, she’s started her own company and her father works with her.
How do you describe your work? “I would say it’s fun, trendy, wearable art. That’s what I like to call it.”
What three adjectives best describe you? “Personally? I would say that I’m extremely motivated, creative and do you want all positives? (laughs) And I would say that I’m spontaneous.”
Cats, dogs, birds … describe your pets? “I have a dog. He’s a pug and his name is Dr. Chang.”
Favorite season? “Oh boy. I would say winter for snowboarding.”
Name a city you’d love to visit. Why? “God there are so many. Somewhere in Greece. I’ll go with Athens.”
What’s the best thing about being single? “Uh Everything! Absolutely everything.”
Describe your ideal “Girls’ Night Out.” “Me and my girlfriends always love to be spontaneous. So we get decked out and go to Hollywood and let the night take us. I like to have girlfriends around me who are `fly by the seat of their pants’ girls who want to have fun with everybody.”
What’s the nicest thing a friend (or friends) have done for you? “My two main girlfriends now. One of them is going to get mad if I don’t mention the other. I had a friend who went traveling around the world and she went to Indonesia and India and all these incredible places. She was in Vietnam – out in the forest, not just a walk. They had to take caravans and hike through mountains and she saw a necklace on the women that she fell in love with. They don’t sell them but she got them to make me one for inspiration.”
What do you do for “Gigi” time? “Whenever I get the chance I love to race cars. That’s what I was supposed to do in this lifetime but my parents didn’t let me go t o driving school.”
What’s the best advice you ever received? “The best advice I ever received? I’ll go with my dad and something he’s always told me growing up. I’ve always wanted to be a business woman so I really paid attention to this, `Someone doesn’t buy something because they don’t like something, they don’t buy it because they weren’t sold.’ That was a personal motivation quote for me.”
What quality do you admire most in a man? “I would say – I guess – motivation would be the word. A willingness to succeed, not necessarily to make a million dollars but a man who has passion to better himself and be the best kind of man he can be no matter what the situation. It’s so sexy to find a man who wants everything.”
What quality do you admire most in a woman? “Drive. It all leads back to business. I love being independent and being able to control the situation. For women to be independent, to be able to determine their life and stability is very key and important for every woman.”
Who are your real life heroes? “My mom and dad, 100%. This last year was probably the hardest year of our lives as a family. My dad had a hard time. My parents had everything and to see them lose everything…But they had more love then I’ve ever seen and more respect and through everything, my mom stood by my dad. It was a beautiful thing and I got to see real love in real life and it’s beautiful. I tell them all the time, you’re making it really hard to find my future potential husband.”
What is your guilty pleasure? “Cereal. Oh my god. I can’t keep it in the house. I can’t go by a box of cereal without eating some, it will be gone by the nighttime.”
What is your biggest fear? “My biggest fear would be for my parents to not be happy – not with me – but for themselves everything I do, I’m doing for them too and I just want them to be happy.”
If you could change one thing in your past, what would it be? “I might have pushed my parents a little harder to let me go to driving school. But I did just race a Lamborghini LP560 around a racetrack a couple of weeks ago. My other girlfriend bought me a day at the racetrack for my birthday. Seriously though, I legitimately don’t have any regrets. Wherever you are, if you can look at yourself and say you’re happy then everything was the right thing to do, even the negative.”
Other than your own talents, what talent would you most like to have? “I guess it would be amazing to sing. I sing all the time now but nobody wants to hear me. I secretly think everybody wants to be a rock star.”
What is your motto? Or what words do you live by? “There was a quote that I say to myself all the time. Early last year, I needed something spiritual and I picked up a book called Zen for Idiots. It gave you the cliff notes on how to be Zen. One of the quotes was, ‘Nothing matters but you, the real you, the essential you. You will always be there. You will always be perfect and you will always be just fine.”
