Still looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? We asked moms to share their best and worst Mother’s Day Gift stories. Here are a few of our favorites:
“I received a construction paper card, upon which a smiley heart was quickly drawn with a nearly-dried up red marker, and reading Happy Moms Day, Mom. I received this card from a waving hand holding it by its teenage owner who was staring at the television while she lay on the couch. I had just been happening by with an armload of clean folded towels on the way to the linen closet. `Gee, thanks so much,’ I said. `You’re welcome,’ said the card-maker, not bothering to look away from the television.” ~ Fran Pitre, Mother of 6, Author, TWINS x 3 www.twinsx3.com
“I used some family photos – past and present – to create a greeting card keepsake for my mom – she said it was the best gift she ever received and it brought tears to her eyes.” ~ Cheryl Aughton, www.earthtonegreetings.com
“It’s not exactly a gift, but the worst Mother’s Day anything I got was a card from my older son (I don’t think there was a gift anyway) that advised me to fix up the upstairs bathroom. I called him, and he was confused as to why I was put off. DUH!” ~ Ann Middleman
“My youngest daughter, then 6 years old, came up with the idea to fill my three empty pedestal flower pots that sit near our front door. My husband and little Erin shopped the day before at the flower nursery and secretly hid the flowers until the next morning. Early on Mother’s Day morning, Erin and her dad carefully planted gorgeous bright red and yellow geraniums in the pots. They later led me to out to see my gift and I was blown away by the love and thoughtfulness my young daughter possessed, and her desire to make me so happy. I don’t know whose smile was the widest, hers or mine!” ~ Fran Pitre, Mother of 6, Author, TWINS x 3 www.twinsx3.com
“The worst Mother’s Day gift I ever got was waking-up to breakfast in bed, at six AM, to a bowl of a dozen raw eggs (with shells) mixed with green food coloring. My daughter (age 5) was replicating a dish her kindergarten class made after reading Green Eggs and Ham. Thank heavens she didn’t try to cook it! I spent my mother’s day morning scrubbing-off green food coloring from the kitchen floor.” ~ Jacqueline Edelberg, www.howtowalktoschool.com
“I just went through my first colonoscopy and this is weird, but as a single working mom for 10 years, working a full-time job and teaching in the evening, I realized how much I just needed rest for Mother’s Day. Everyone at the hospital kept saying, I know this is uncomfortable, etc. But, I was able to lie on a bed, alone, and they kept bringing me warm blankets, and warm socks. Then after the procedure, I was asked if I wanted anything to drink, felt great because of the anesthia. Then someone drove me home to sleep the rest of the day. I know this is somewhat sick – but never felt so rested in my life!” ~ Paula Jordan
