According to 2009 U.S. Census Bureau Statistics, more than half of unmarried Americans are women. In fact, there are 100 single women available for every 88 single men. If those numbers have you in a panic, you might want to move to a country where the men outnumber the women – the expats anyway.
A labor force survey by the Dubai Statistics Centre shows that the number of single male expatriates working in Dubai is over six times higher than the number of single female expats – 289,024 men compared with 46,239 women. Of course you may be considered a little strange for having a job. Emirati women are scarce in the labor force, with just 23.9 per cent in active employment. Economists have pointed to women as an untapped source of economic growth in The United Arab Emirates (UAE), recommending they be encouraged to enter the workforce in greater numbers.
But as the SATC gals found out, there will be no nookie in public in the UAE. Marriage is perceived as the only way for two people to have a relationship and conceive children, with legal penalties placed on male-female relationships outside of it. An expatriate who was found guilty of kissing his friend in a Dubai restaurant this year lost his appeal against a one-month jail sentence.
