In this day in age, we are all “dialed in 24/7″ whether it be through our laptops, cell phones or other technical devices. We can text, email, pull up directions even check our bank accounts from any single location. Given these advancements in technology, we can also expedite the professional tasks we perform at work, which means that we often juggle things from our to-do list all at once.
While this may get us noticed by our boss, it can wreck havoc on our well being, which is why my father – being the wise soul that he is – often reminds me, “Things that matter least should never come at the mercy of things that matter most.”
What does he mean by that?
Basically that without proper nutrition or exercise, my work is useless. When I neglect my physical health and spiritual health, I am less creative, super stressed out and on the brink of exhaustion. Of course, I don’t ever do this on purpose, nobody does; this breaking point comes as a result of being overwhelmed from 5 days per week of multi-tasking. After a day’s hard work, very few people have the energy to pick up a book let alone go for a run. Our health then slides down our chain of priorities and stress levels increase.
When I abide by my fathers motto, I take care of my health by practicing yoga, going for runs, hiking, and keeping a journal. The result from these activities often means my body becomes more balanced and I am able to perform the necessary functions to complete my job. I am more alert, less stressed and I sleep better at night.
So how can you prioritize your health amidst a busy work week? Here are a few tips I have found that really help me:
Exercise before you work
So you may have to wake up an hour earlier than normal but the benefits of taking a morning power walk or going for a run outweigh the slight deprivation in shut-eye. Exercising gets your circulatory system pumping, something that is imperative if your job is sitting at a desk for 8+ hours.
Find a work out buddy
Can’t sacrifice time in the morning? Have to go to the gym after work? Then get a buddy to join you for encouragement and accountability. You are less likely to bail on a buddy, which ensures you will exercise.
Journal Over Lunch
The majority of us utilize computers which means we are staring into our screens for extended periods of time. This can alter our eyesight and cause headaches. Take 15 minutes of your lunch break to put some thoughts down on paper. It will help you clear your head and start the remaining hours of your day with a fresh perspective.
Now more than ever, it is so important for us all to remember that eating right, exercising and clearing our minds will help us become more productive and successful. Take it from my father.
