Just because you’re single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a treat. Here are five financially practical valentines to give yourself and five pure fun (and reasonable) gifts for Valentine’s Day!
Start small
Like, today–set up a small deposit every month into either a high interest saving or an online certificate of deposit (CD) account. Use accounts to that help automatically like BOA’s “Keep the Change”.
Dip a luxury chocolate
Strawberries, or your fruit of choice. Here are two recipes for making this treat with your own ingredients. The best—you’re supposed to make and eat the same day and you get the heavenly smell in your own kitchen!
Knock it off
Show your credit card who’s boss. Slow down your accumulated balance by consciously not buying with your card. Go to the box office to buy tickets, buy with cash/your debit card, send a money order for online purchases, and save for a larger ticket item. It’s awkward but worth the peace of mind of a smaller, manageable balance.
Gather your tribe
Give yourself the gift of company by hosting a games’ night or just meeting friends for dinner. Let the dueling schedules and laughter begin. Look forward to catching up instead of just exchanging, “We really should get together!”
Retire the fear
Anne D’Amico, a CPA with Alloy Silverstein suggests the best Valentine’s day gift is to open up a Roth IRA. “A Roth IRA is a type of individual retirement account. Contributions to Roth IRAs grow tax free and there are no minimum distribution requirements. Contribute up to $5,000 ($6,000 if over 50) every Valentine’s Day as a financial gift to yourself.”
Send an LOL
Connect with friends or family with a laugh. This card says, “I love you” in a belly laugh inducing way. Or send a chuckle with this card that sports a witty quote card from the fabulous Jane Fonda.
Accelerate your mortgage
Either through bi-weekly payments, or with even just one extra payment per year, you’ll save thousands in interest on your mortgage. Worth saving for.
Bling with goodwill
Get some reasonable, stylish jewelry for yourself that’s made of recycled silver content or from a cocoa tin, or some jewelry that gives back, and some that helps re-build Haiti.
Cover yourself
Either through work or on your own, sign up for disability insurance. This insurance covers you either for either a short- or long-term disability. Especially for single women, this salary protection is invaluable.
Update your iPod
To fuel your workouts, or just because you deserve the best tunes, gift yourself some new music. With more soundtracks and the Beatles now on iTunes, All You Need is Love.

I love the strawberry idea. Never thought of doing it myself and what a super treat!
